Welcome to the General W.L. Cabell Camp in Dallas.
History of the Cabell Camp
In late spring of 1973, a new camp was chartered in Dallas, Texas. It honored a former Confederate General, four-time Mayor of Dallas, and active leader of the United Confederate Veterans, General W.L. Cabell. Starting with only ten members, the camp grew quickly. By 1977 when it hosted the General Convention of the SCV, it was one of the largest camps in the nation. As it was the only camp in North Texas its membership encompassed compatriots across the entire state.
Members living in areas outside of Dallas were encouraged to recruit additional members in their own locales and charter new camps. The Cabell Camp takes pride that it has fathered a number of other Texas camps. Even with the number of members transferred to start the new camps, the Cabell Camp remains one of the Confederation's largest camps.
Members of the camp take part in many activities in the area, including annual heritage celebrations, parades, re-enactments, gun shows, and living history demonstrations. Each member of the Camp receives his own copy of "The Rebel Yell". This monthly newsletter has succeeded "The Rebel Rouser" and "The Dispatch", and provides timely news, book reviews, and announcements of programs and other important events. The Editor of "The Rebell Yell", Adjutant Daryl Coleman, can be reached for comments or article submission at darylcoleman@dkco.com .
Members are active in the growth and operation of the SCV, earning their compatriots support as officers for all levels of the organization. In addition to members serving on all levels of the Texas Division and the Trans-Mississippi Department, the Camp has provided One Commander-in-Chief of the SCV and two Commanders-in-Chief of the MOS&B.
The camp meets at 7PM on the fourth Friday of each month at the BarBecs Family Restaurant, 8949 Garland Rd, Dallas, TX 75218 (214-321-5597). These meetings with their historical programs are open to the public, young and old, male and female. Y'all come!
